A Survival Guide for the Week After Everything Falls Apart

Real tools for real weight. Not toxic positivity - logistics for heavy seasons.

This one isn't about momentum, exactly. It's about the weeks when momentum is a fantasy - when something has genuinely collapsed and the productivity advice that usually helps suddenly reads like satire. The job ends, the relationship ends, the diagnosis lands, the call comes. Now what?

First, the rule that overrides every other rule on this site: heavy seasons get different physics. Do not measure this week against normal weeks. The goal is not progress. The goal is to stay operational.

Days one through three: logistics only

Lower the bar until it's on the floor: eat something, drink water, sleep where sleeping is possible, tell one person the truth about what happened. That's the entire list. Feelings will be enormous and weird and arrive in the wrong order - grief on Tuesday, jet-lag numbness on Wednesday, rage at a parking meter on Thursday. None of it needs to be fixed. It needs to be allowed to pass through.

The rest of the week: one anchor a day

Pick one - one - small fixed point per day. A shower at the same time. A ten-minute walk. The same playlist. (Mine exists for exactly this; it's the slow one, not the fierce one.) Anchors don't make the week good. They make it survivable, and they quietly keep your identity online: someone who, even now, does one thing on purpose.

What not to do

Don't make big decisions this week - the part of your brain that makes good ones is busy. Don't measure yourself against your normal output. And don't let anyone, including you, rush the timeline. "Moving forward" during collapse looks like staying alive and answering one email. That counts. This week, that's the whole assignment.

Zero days don't exist in a week like this, by the way. If you got through it, the day was non-zero. That's the rule, and I'm not negotiating.

One Forward Thing

A short monthly email. One idea, one song, one small brave action. No 47-email funnel, now or ever. It hasn't started yet. Leave your email and you'll be on it from issue one.
